The Volcano Rabbit, also known as the Mexican Rabbit, is a species endemic to Mexico. It is distributed near the four extinct volcanoes in Mexico: Iztacihuatl Volcano, Perado Volcano, Popocatepetl Volcano and Tlaloc Volcano. It lives at an altitude of 2,800 meters. to 4,250 meters of coniferous forest and rocky terrain.
It is the second smallest rabbit in the world, second only to the dwarf rabbit. Its short ears and short legs can make people mistake it for a mouse. They live in small groups of up to five, are often active at night, and emit very high-pitched sounds to warn other rabbits of approaching danger.
It was listed as an endangered species in 2018 due to human factors such as climate change, environmental development and hunting.
