Also known as the tofu shark, it is the largest fish in the world, with a maximum body length of up to 20 meters. It inhabits coastal, offshore or offshore waters in the tropical to subtropical waters of the three oceans. They can be found in the waters around Taiwan.
Whale sharks are huge in size but feed on plankton, small fish, shrimp, algae and seaweed, and are docile in nature. Ovoviviparous, a female shark pregnant with 300 baby sharks was once found in Taiwan waters, and is considered the most prolific shark species currently known.
Due to man-made fishing, the number of whale sharks has been significantly reduced. Taiwan banned the capture and sale of whale sharks in 2008, and the IUCN assessed them as an endangered species in 2016.
